The pastel (a fried pastry filled with cheese, chicken, eggs, and sorts of other foods), served at children’s parties, or the ones made at fairs or even the homemade is not an ally of our health!
The oil used to prepare frying, reaches high temperatures and forms a substance called acrolein. This has a high carcinogenic potential, can also cause irritation in the stomach and may alter the elasticity of our arteries walls.
In addition, when we put the oil exposed to high temperatures, changes in its chemical composition occur. This causes a change in the structure of the fat molecule from unsaturated to saturated. And saturated fats tend to increase our body’s bad cholesterol (LDL) which can cause plaque buildup in blood vessels and cardiovascular disease.
And it’s not just the pastel oil that’s harmful!!
Its dough also contains trans-fats (hydrogenated vegetable fats), which are also damaging to our health, so it’s no use preparing it in the oven or in fryers without oil.
